The 9:20 Deluxe Swing Band was formed at the Spearmint Rhino Gents’ Club in Tottenham Court Road, London, where there was once a blossoming Monday night swing dance club.
Their mission was to recreate a full-scale swing band sound with the smallest possible instrumentation in order to accommodate smaller venues or restrictive budgets.
The default line-up now consists of nine of the best brass and rhythm players in London. Led by Pete Long, a front-line player with the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, the carefully crafted arrangements give the impression of a band twice its size. For larger venues and budgets, the band is expandable up to a regular 30-piece big band orchestra. And for a Billie Holliday or Frank Sinatra soundalike, the band work with many vocalists and are happy to recommend.
Performances including regular Monday and Saturday nights at the 100 Club in London’s West End, Wednesdays at the Notre Dame Hall in Leicester Square and headlining at the International Swingmaster’s Jam for five years have all brought the 9:20 Deluxe Swing Band a dance reputation second to none. In addition, the band frequently appear for jazz clubs nationwide. They have also appeared at all the major Park Lane Hotels, private parties in and around London and even for the re-release of the film classic ‘High Society’.
